Folio 157a
…is contrary: when the surface of the Indian sea is calm, the surface of the Persian sea is dangerous, very dark and full of waves. Its roughness lasts from the sun's entry into Virgo until near the autumn equinox. The Indian sea is the opposite.*1
Fine(?) pearls such as are found in the Persian sea are found in no other sea.*1
Its islands have mines of carnelian, many kinds of rubies, gold, silver, iron and copper mines, and many kinds of perfume. There is also a whirlpool: whoever enters it stays there forever and perishes. There are also animals of strange shapes.
Most of the islands are inhabited, and sailors put in at them.
Kharak Island. Fine pearl-shell is brought up from that island. Now and then a matchless pearl is found there such as no king's treasury holds. It is found near Oman and Bahrain.
They relate that pearl-shell is found only where fresh water mixes with the sea. When spring comes and the winds blow(?), the winds lift spray from the Ocean sea; this spray is a viscous water like quicksilver. The shell swallows that spray, and from it the pearl forms. The shell that has swallowed the drop comes up from under the water to the surface(?).*2
When the north wind blows, and at sunrise and sunset, it does not stay in the sea at those places, for the fierce heat of the sun and the sea's waves spoil the pearl. When it comes out, the north wind meets the pearl and it sets hard, for the shell always opens its mouth to the winds.*2
Then, if the belly of the shell is free of salt water, the pearl turns out exceedingly fine; if salt water has mixed in, the pearl leans toward yellow.
When the pearl has fully formed inside the shell, the shell takes a firm, hard place on the sea floor and puts out roots like a plant. People know when the shell has arrived and give one another the good news. When the diver reaches the bottom he wrenches it from its place with [?] and force and brings it up.*3

لؤلؤ جيدother readings:لؤلؤجه,لؤلؤ جديدSatır sonunda لؤلؤ'dan sonra ج + د, üstüne sıkıştırılmış küçük ي-د. 'lü'lü' ceyyid' (iyi inci) okudum: Kazvînî Fars denizinin incisini övüyor, cümle 'hiçbir denizde olmaz' diye bitiyor. Ama sıkıştırılmış harfler 'cedîd' de okunabilir; ikisi de cümleye tam oturmuyor. Bir insanın bakması gerek. - *2line 13
