Folio 173a
…[God] has created [that bird]. Once the filth between its teeth is gone, the crocodile wants to shut its mouth and catch the bird, but the spike on the bird's head stops it, and the bird escapes and flies away.*1
The crocodile's enemy is the water-dog. When the crocodile is about to sleep, it sleeps with its mouth open. Then the water-dog smears itself with mud and goes into its mouth, at once cuts its bowels and kills it, and comes out again through its mouth. Were it not for the water-dog, the crocodile might have grown so many that no one could even come near.
Its legal ruling: its flesh is forbidden. Its properties: if someone whose eye aches carries the crocodile's eye on him, the pain goes away. Its fat, smeared on gout, removes it. Its gall, applied as kohl, removes the white film in the eye. If its liver is burnt and an epileptic smells the smoke, the epilepsy goes away. And this is its picture.

The zamur is a blessed fish; when it falls into a net, the fishermen let it go. Its property is this: if it sees a ship at sea, it goes ahead of it as a guide and does not leave it until the ship reaches wherever they want to go. Whenever a large(?) [fish] sets out to harm the ship, the zamur at once goes into its ear and keeps it(?) busy, and the ship escapes. And this is its picture.*2*3
