If it is brought up at the right time it is very lustrous and fine; but if it is brought up before or after its time, its colour changes once it is out of the water.*1
The island of Hamak(?): it is near the island of Qays. Its people are patient and zealous; in fighting at sea and in planning voyages their judgement is complete.*1
It is told that the people of the city of Qays sent a gift to the kings of Persia: they put Indian slave girls on a ship and sent it off. When the girls reached that place they left the ship, became acquainted with the people [?] by name and repute, mingled and united with the jinn, and bore children.*2
Their children were so brave, so awe-inspiring and so daring that a hundred men could not stand against one of them. Taking swords in their mouths they would range the sea for three days and three nights without stopping, and fight with the sword while swimming. No one on earth surpassed them in swimming and daring.*3
The island of Kand(?): grey and black ambergris is brought from that island. The Omanis and Sirafis who sail there say that ambergris grows on the floor of the Persian Sea. When a great storm rises at sea and the wind called lodos blows, it tears the ambergris from the sea floor and brings it up to the surface.*3
The islanders know when this happens and search for it and gather it. Sometimes it casts up a mass like a great hill; the people break it into pieces and share it out among themselves by lot.
In that sea there is a kind of fish; when it circles on the surface they know the sea is about to rise, so they put off the voyage and tie up the ships. Within a full day or less(?) storms break out and the sea turns pitch dark.*4
The Persian Sea mostly begins its storms on the thirteenth day of Kanun the Latter (January), and they last for a known number of days…*4
