continued from fol. 162asome moisture. I said: this moisture is from water…

…came about; its source had to be behind the hill(?). With this in mind I went over behind the hill.*1

Suddenly a band of people came out: their heads were dogs' heads and their bodies human bodies. One of them came up to me with a stick in his hand and drove me before him as one drives sheep; I was helpless, what could I do? He took me to a house, and there I saw many people like me. When they saw me they said, “Alas! Where have you come from, and why have you fallen into this misfortune?”

“What misfortune?” I said. They said: “These people bring all kinds of food and fruit and make us eat; once a man has put on some flesh and fat, they slaughter him like a sheep and eat him.” Fear overcame me and I fainted.

At last I resolved to take to whatever makes the body weak. I watched them bring food and fruit; then they took a fat man from among us, slaughtered him before our eyes and cut him to pieces, set aside a portion of the meat for their lord(?) and shared out the rest among themselves by weight. For a year I bore this torment. In the end only a sick man and I were left; all the others they slaughtered and ate.*2

That sick man said to me: “Once a year these people hold a festival; they all go out, and for three days they stay at the place of the festival and do not come back. Two stages from here there is a great tree; whoever reaches it and has its shade fall upon him, these people cannot touch. But I have grown weak, there is no strength left in my body to walk or stir; you at least act on these words, and it may be that deliverance will be granted.”

So I waited for that day. When the festival came, sure enough all of these people, young and old, men and women, went out together, and not one was left; only the sick man and I remained. They came to me with threats and warnings, brought a little food and fruit, and said, “Eat this until we come back; when we return we shall slaughter you,” and then…
