Folio 162a
…a man related: “While we were at sea our ship sank, and on a plank the winds carried me to an island. I went ashore and saw a people whose stature was a cubit. They gathered around me(?), seized me, drove me along and brought me to their king. When we arrived he ordered me to be confined; they brought something like a bird cage and put me inside. I stood up and (the cage) broke(?); I bore it and stayed there some days. They kept bringing me all kinds of fruit to eat.*1*2
One day I saw them preparing for war. I asked, and they explained by signs that they had an enemy who came once a year to plunder and pillage; their fear was extreme. They said the enemy were strong and given to assault, and that their weapons of war were the leg bones(?) of cranes(?) and storks.*3

They took it for a preparation of weapons of war. I went down to the sea, pushed those trunks into the water and climbed on; they stood gazing after me. The wind drove me on and, by God's command, brought me to the city of the Zanj,” he said.*3

For that sage relates that the stork migrates from Khurasan to the region of Egypt and reaches the course of the waters of the Nile; that in that country there are creatures a cubit tall; and that the storks fight them — so(?) he has stated. This account confirms that statement.*4
The island of Saksar. Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Sarraji relates: I saw a man with scratch marks on his face and asked him the reason. He said: “I boarded a ship and went on a sea voyage. A sudden mishap befell: a violent wind rose, drove our ship and carried it to an island. I went ashore to look about and search for water. I saw a small hill with some moisture. I said: this moisture is from water…*4
