Folio 165a
…cut through the Encircling Ocean on the western side; that is the Sea of Darkness. From there the water spread and laid waste many settled places and countries, and reached as far as the cities(?) and lands of Rum; it barred the way between Egypt and the land of Rum. By this means it saved Egypt from the hands of Rum(?).*1*2
In the way just described, the Sea of the Maghrib, the Sea of Alexandria, the Sea of Syria, the Sea of Rum, the Sea of the Franks and the Sea of Constantinople are all one sea. The meeting place of the two seas (Majma' al-Bahrayn) is where the Sea of Rum and the Sea of the Maghrib join; its breadth is three
parasangs and its length twenty-five parasangs. The colour of the Sea of Rum tends to green and the colour of the Sea of the Maghrib tends to black, so that if a man takes some of its water in his hand, or puts it in a clear vessel and looks at it,
the green and the black show plainly. In the whole of the two seas(?) there is flood and ebb twice a day and four(?) times. The explanation is this: the Black Sea boils up and rises at sunrise and pours into the meeting place of the two seas, until it even enters the Sea of Rum, which is the Green Sea; this lasts until the sun is high. After that the Green Sea overflows and rises over the Black Sea until midnight. After that the Black Sea overflows and pours into the Green Sea until the sun rises. This state of things goes on every day*3*4
without a break. In this sea there are great islands and wondrous animals without end; let us set out truly what we have seen and heard. The Island of Majma' al-Bahrayn. Abu Hamid
al-Andalusi relates in his book called 'Aja'ibat al-Bahr, which he wrote for the vizier Hubayra, that on the island of Majma' al-Bahrayn there is a minaret. It is of pure marble, in one piece; no iron can work it at all. The minaret has no door; on top of it stands the figure of a man. His clothing is a garment(?) like gold; he has stretched his left hand out towards the Black Sea, as if pointing at something with his fingers. People give it many interpretations. The height of the minaret is more than a hundred cubits.*5
He also reports in his book that in the region of al-Andalus, on an island of the Black Sea, a church of pure marble has been built on a great mountain. They say that from events(?)…*6
