continued from fol. 165aon a great mountain. They say that from events(?)…

…was built for one of them. After Jesus, peace be upon him, ascended to heaven, a crow has stood constantly on the dome of the church. Above the crow there is a small dome, which they call the Crow's Dome. Facing the church there is a mosque; people go to visit it and hold it blessed, saying that prayer there is answered. Whenever travellers arrive, the crow cries out as many times as there are travellers. The monks of the church know from the crow's cries how many travellers have come, and they come out of the church and bring food; whoever comes, they entertain. And whenever anyone enters the mosque, the crow pokes its head in through the lattice and shrieks once for each person. The priests say that the crow stays on this dome night and day and gives warning from there, and no one has ever known what it eats. They say it is a miracle of Jesus, peace be upon him.*1

The island of Tinnis is in the Sea of Rum, and it is a large island. Abu Hamid says that fish found in no other sea live here, of many kinds; when the season of one kind passes, the next kind comes out, so that not a single day of the year goes by empty. There is also a kind of tree: whoever smells its flowers is at once overcome by sleep and cannot help falling asleep. Wild sheep are as many as locusts, so many that escape(?) is impossible; they are hunted night and day. When a household has guests, the master goes outside and takes a sheep from the wild as if buying it at a butcher's shop. And those aboard any ship that puts in near the island always go ashore and hunt as much as they like.*2

The same author also says that near Old Constantinople there is a church; once a year the sea draws back from over it and it comes into view. People know the time and wait; when it is uncovered they go to visit it and make sacrifices. From morning until the time of the afternoon prayer they go inside it. The afternoon…*3
