…it happens that the fish swallows ambergris like a wire(?) from the bottom of that sea, and the heat of the ambergris kills it. When it comes out, they take the ambergris out of its belly.*1

The ambergris found inside its belly is black and has no delicacy of scent; what is found on its back side is grey and exceedingly fine.

The people there know that ambergris grows on the bottom of that sea, but divers can never bring it up for fear of the fish, for when it senses a man it is sure to swallow him. And this is its picture.

The Sea of the Maghrib is the Sea of Syria. Its source is the Encircling Ocean; it branches off from the Encircling Ocean and stretches eastward.

First it reaches the north of Andalusia, then the lands of the Franks, and then Constantinople. On the southern side it stretches first to Salé, then to Kesniye(?) and Tangier, then to Tripoli and Alexandria, and then to the coasts of Syria and Antioch.*2

In this sea there are also great islands, such as the island of Andalusia, Aqurqa(?), Sicily, Aqutis(?), Cyprus and Rhodes.*3*4

It is recorded in the Book of the History of Egypt that after Pharaoh perished, the kings of the Banu Daluka took possession of these islands. Those kings were men of judgment and planning.
