continued from fol. 152aHere is its picture.

Pearls are also found in that sea. The Durdur is near it as well; sailors, knowing this, do not go near the place close to it.

Some of the merchants relate: On one voyage our ship was caught by a violent gale; driven before the wind, we went on [crying?] "God, God!"(?). The ship's captain was a master who knew the seas, but he was blind. Every so often he would ask, "What do you see on the face of the sea?"*1*2*3

When we first boarded the ship we had seen that he had loaded a great quantity of ropes. We said, "Had you loaded merchants' goods in their place, how much profit you would have made!" He said, "The wisdom of this will be known when it is needed."*3*4

At one place he asked again, "What do you see on the face of the sea?" We told him, "We see black birds in the distance." At once he cried out and began to tear at his beard; we were astonished. He said, "The wind has brought us to the Durdur. Those black birds are ships that fell into the Durdur, perished and have remained there."*4*5

Then he said, "If you wish to be saved, give me whatever provisions of meat you have." Everyone gave their food, and we brought out our dried meat as well. At once he cut it into pieces, tied it firmly to the ropes and threw it into the sea. Straightaway fish of enormous bulk gathered and swallowed the tied meat. He ordered drums and bowls to be beaten, and we beat them. Suddenly(?) we saw that the ship was moving.*6

When in this way we had come out of the Durdur, he had the ropes cut and said: "I provided the ropes with this in mind. Had it not been so, all of you would have perished. For there is no getting out of the Durdur: the winds never blow there and the water forever turns in a circle. Even if those inside had provisions enough for ten years, they would surely run out, and they would die of hunger. Those black birds are ships that…"*6
