…that by fate fell into the Durdur (whirlpool), and their crews perished of hunger. Now those ships circle in the Durdur forever, until they rot and fall apart," he said.
The Sea of India
It is the greatest of the seas and exceedingly wide. The manner of its connection with the Encircling Ocean has also become known(?), because of its great extent. The connection of the Western Sea is evident; that of the Sea of India is not known. Two gulfs branch off from the Sea of India: the greatest of them is the Sea of Fars, and one is the Sea of Qulzum. The gulf that branches off from the Indian sea to the north is the Sea of Fars; the one that branches off to the south is the Sea of Merij(?).*1*2
Ibn al-Faqih says: the Indian sea is contrary to the other seas. For when the sun comes to Pisces, near the spring equinox, its darkness increases there and its waves come one after another; at that time no ship can sail for the severity of the fear. When the sun reaches Gemini, its waves become so violent and its darkness so great that it cannot be approached in any way. This state lasts until the autumn equinox. When the sun reaches Virgo, its darkness lessens, its waves are few, its back grows smooth and sailing on it becomes easy. So it is until the sun reaches Pisces; and its utmost gentleness and calm come when the sun enters Sagittarius. The other seas are the reverse of what has been described.*2
In the Sea of India there are wondrous islands, plants and animals; let us describe some of them, as far as our knowledge and our account reach. Ptolemy the sage says: in the Sea of India there are more than twenty thousand islands, and the kinds and numbers of the creatures in them God Most High alone knows. The author of the book says: we shall describe those that are well known, from the reports of trustworthy people who set out from among us and from our country and travelled there.*3*4
It is in the Sea of India, near the island of Rabeja(?). Ibn al-Faqih(?) says…*3*4

معلوم اولمشدرother readings:معلوم اولمامشدرOkuma açık: اولمشدر (ش noktaları bu kâtipte ^ biçiminde).
- *3line 21
رابجهother readings:زابجهر üstünde nokta görünmüyor (رابجه); Kazvînî'deki Zâbec adası (الزابج) kastedilmiş olabilir, o zaman kâtip ز noktasını atlamış. Bir insan karar vermeli. - *4line 21
Sonraki varakla (153b) teyit edilmeli.

درياكرهother readings:دريالرهÇÖZÜLDÜ: ا'dan sonraki harfin üstündeki eğik çizgi ك keşidesi gibi duruyor (درياكره), ama böyle bir kelime yok; anlam 'sâir deryâlara' (öteki denizlere). ar alanı görüldüğü gibi bırakıldı, translit 'deryâlara'. Harfin ل mi ك mi olduğu anlamı değiştirmiyor. - resolvedline 14
Bu yüzden 14. satır sonundaki nokta cümleyi bölmüyor: 'gâyet letâfet ve i'tidâli, şems burc-ı Kavs'a dâhil oldukda olur'. Ancak 'Balık burcuna varınca' ile 'Yay burcuna girince' arasındaki mevsim mantığı tam oturmuyor (Balık'ta karanlığın arttığı 8. satırda söylenmişti); metin harfiyen çevrildi. - resolvedline 16
