continued from fol. 153aIndia, near the island of Rabeja(?). Ibn al-Faqih(?) says…

…On that island there lives a people whose faces are human and whose hair is like the hair of monkeys. Rhinoceroses are also plentiful. The island has several lofty mountains; at night the beating of drums and tambourines, strange cries and wondrous wailing are heard from their summits. Sailors say that the Antichrist (Dajjal) is on that island.*1*2

Cloves, too, are traded on that island. The merchants come to the harbour, unload their goods from the ship, each sets his own apart, and they go back on board. They stay there that night; in the morning they find that cloves have been brought and set beside the goods. If a merchant is content, he takes the cloves, and the goods stay where they were left. When night falls the islanders come, take the goods and carry them off to wherever their dwellings lie.

If the islanders do not accept the goods, the merchants understand that the goods are too few; they add more and leave the cloves in their place as well. In the morning they find that the goods have been taken and the cloves left behind, and the merchants take them and put them on the ship.

But if the merchants find the cloves too few and do not accept them, the goods and the cloves both stay where they are. The islanders come at night and see that the merchants have not accepted(?) the cloves; at once they bring more cloves, set them on top and leave. The next day the merchants see that cloves have been added, and they take them. The islanders come again at night, see that the merchants have agreed, and take the goods away. Or else they take back their cloves and go, and each man finds his goods where he left them.*3*4

A trustworthy man among the merchants relates: «I went up onto that island and saw a people: beardless and sallow; their ears hung down to their waists(?), and they were in women's dress(?). As soon as I saw them they vanished from my sight. After that we waited six months for cloves, and they never showed themselves(?). I understood that this was because I had gone onto the island and seen them. For several years they did no trade at all; after a time they began to bring cloves again.»*5*6*7*8*9

The property of those cloves…*9

continues on fol. 154a…is such that if a person eats a mithqal…
