continued from fol. 153bThe property of those cloves…

…is such that if a person eats a mithqal of it while it is fresh, grey hair and old age never come upon that person. It is said that their clothing is the leaves of the clove tree, a tree they call lūf(?). They eat its fruit and make clothes of its leaves.*1

They also eat fish, bananas and coconuts.

The Island of Salāhiṭ(?) is in the Indian Sea. Sandalwood, spikenard and camphor are produced on this island.*2

It is reported that in that sea there is a kind of fish that comes out of the water and climbs the trees, eats of their fruit(?) and becomes drunk. The people then go and catch them without any trouble.*3

The author of the Tuḥfat al-Gharāʾib says that on that island there is a spring whose water, flowing by night, sets into black stone, and flowing by day sets into white stone. All the buildings of the island are made of it.

Only two of them turned back from the palace gate, returned to the ship and were saved.*4

When Alexander the Two-Horned was travelling by ship, a people came at him over the face of the sea and fought with him. Their heads were the heads of dogs, and tusks like those of swine came out of their mouths. Alexander saw a palace that gleamed and shone like light. That people … from the palace…
