continued from fol. 166ba rock. Joshua was looking out at the sea…

…was strolling and taking in the sights. Suddenly the wind lifted a drop from the sea, and it fell on the roasted fish, half of which had been eaten. When the drop fell on it, the fish came to life, leapt and fell into the sea, and the place where it went through the sea became a road and opened up.*1

While Joshua was marvelling at this, Moses, peace be upon him, woke from his sleep. Without delay they set off and went on their way. When they had gone some distance, Moses, peace be upon him, said: "O Joshua, the road has grown long and we have not reached our goal. Bring the fish, then, and let us eat, so that our bodies may gain some strength."

Joshua said: "O Moses, a strange thing happened to the fish; Satan made me forget to tell you." Moses, peace be upon him, said: "How did it happen?" Joshua said: "While you were asleep a drop sprang from the sea; when it touched the fish, the fish came to life that very moment and fell into the sea, and the place where it went opened like a road." Moses, peace be upon him, said: "God Most High [?] is pointing the way; [?] this is the right one."*2*3

When they reached the middle of the sea they saw a radiant old man at prayer.*2*3

Moses waited a little, and when the old man had finished his prayer he greeted him. The old man said: "And upon you be peace, O Moses son of Imran." Moses, peace be upon him, said: "How did you come to know my name?" The old man said: "The One who sent you made it known to me." Moses said: "I beg to be in your service, so that you may teach me too of the knowledge God Most High has granted you." Khidr, peace be upon him, said: "O Moses, all my doings and ways run against custom; you will not be able to bear them patiently." Moses said: "God willing, I shall be patient."

Khidr, Moses and Joshua set off and came to the seashore. They saw a laden ship just about to sail; the sailor [?]…*4
