continued from fol. 167aladen ship just about to sail; the sailor [?]…

…seeing them, (the sailor) said "[they are dervishes?]", at once brought food, and took them aboard the ship without payment, and they set sail. One day Khidr, peace be upon him, took an axe in his hand and cut away one side of the ship.*1

The sailor said nothing, thinking there must be some wisdom in it. But Moses said: "O Khidr, this sailor did us a kindness; kindness ought to be repaid with kindness, yet you have damaged his ship. Or is your aim that those on board should drown?" Khidr said: "O Moses, did I not tell you that you would not be able to bear it patiently?" Moses said: "Accept my excuse this time; I shall not object again."

Then they left the ship and came to a town; that town is Antioch. They wished to eat, but no one gave them food, and they were even kept out of the town. Outside the town they saw a garden wall that had tilted and was about to fall. Khidr said "In the name of God", took hold of it with his hand and set it straight. Moses said: "The people of this town gave us no provision. Since you wanted to straighten the wall, we might at least have asked for a wage. You have repaid their wrongs with kindness."

Moses said: "Be gracious, and this time too do not take me to task for my forgetfulness; hold me excused; once more [let me be?] patient [?]." Again they went on. At last they came to a town and saw children gathered together at play.*2*3

Khidr, peace be upon him, seized one boy from among them, pulled him aside, tore off his head and threw it away. Moses, peace be upon him, could not restrain himself and said: "O Khidr, this is plainly against the noble Law; it is against the ruling of the Torah. Why have you killed an innocent without right?"

Khidr said: "O Moses, you will never be capable of patience, and you have no share in this knowledge. From here on, parting is decreed. To remove the doubt in your heart, let me tell you: the sailor of that ship, who showed us hospitality and kindness, it was necessary that to the sailor…"

Tahmin edilmedi.
