continued from fol. 169apeace be upon him, entreated God the Real that…

…one day permission was given for him to host all creatures as guests. (Solomon) gave the order, and from near and far he gathered so much provision that no account or ledger could hold it. He fixed a day (for the feast).

Before all the others God Most High sent a fish, and it asked for that day's sustenance. Solomon said, 'Eat until you are full.' The fish came to the provisions and ate all of it, then came to Solomon and said, 'O Prophet of God, today I have gone hungry.' Solomon was astonished and said, 'How much is your food each day?' The fish said, 'My daily ration is three times this provision; God Most High grants it every day from the treasury of the unseen.' Solomon asked God's forgiveness and gave the matter up. The fish said, 'O Solomon, honouring a guest is [this(?)]: that you give him food as much as his ration.' And it went off to the sea in pain and distress.*1

They relate that when Moses, peace be upon him, went to commune with God, he communed for forty days and never needed food; but when he came back to his people, hunger overcame him. So too today, a person in hope of reaching his goal forgets food and drink, and the moment his wish is granted it occurs to him that he has not eaten.

Abu Hamid al-Andalusi says: In that sea there is a kind of large fish. When the sea water withdraws it is left on the ground and stirs for about six hours; then two wings appear from under its skin, and at once it flies off and drops into the sea.

The tinnin (dragon) is plentiful in that sea; most of them are found near Tripoli, Latakia and Jabal al-Aqra'. At times it comes out onto land and swallows whatever animals it finds; it is a great affliction for that country.

The Sea of the Khazars (the Caspian): it is the sea of Tabaristan and Jurjan, and lies along the shores of those two cities. On its eastern side are the lands of the Khazars; on its western side the Alans and mountains; [fik(?)] to its south lie Jil(?) and Daylam. It is a great and wide sea; of the seas on the face of the earth…*2*3

  • *2line 20 فیقother readings: قبق (Kabk, Kafkas dağları; 'cibâl-i Kabk'), فوقHarfler açık: ف (tek nokta), altında bir iz, ق.
  • *3line 21 جبلother readings: جیل (Cîl, Gîlân), جبل (cebel, dağ)Yazı 'جبل' gibi; noktanın yeri ب/ی ayırmaya yetmiyor.
  • *4line 22 بیوکother readings: بیوکی, بیوکدرİşaret kelimesi; ilk harfin noktaları dağınık, kuyruk uzun.
